Historical Photographs of Methuen

 Back

These three views of the Grey Court Estate were taken about 1900.

Formal visitors approached the mansion through the gate house on Pleasant Street and continued along a winding road up the hill to the mansion. The road was laid out to allow visitors to see the building on three sides and take in some spectacular views of Methuen olong the way.

The first close up view of the mansion would be the west side which showed the veranda and water fountained court yard.

Further along the road to the estate more of the mansion became visible. The south side of the building displayed manicured lawns and various exotic plantings.
As one approached the front of the mansion (East Side) the road wound away slightly and circled a landscaped pond in front of the building. Visitors continued on the road toward the North East side stopping at the front doors of the mansion. Eventually, the visitors wound have had the opportunity to admire not only all four sides of the mansion but much of the landscaped ground also.
